This is a traditional therapy used in many areas. This therapy is based on the belief everyone has the capacity and desire for personal growth and change if a person is given the right set of conditions. The counsellor is not seen as the expert who directs the therapy. They offer unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence in a safe protected space to help the client come to terms with negative feelings this in turn helps the client to change and develop. .
This uses therapeutic play as a means to communicate with the child, helping them to explore and express their feelings and emotional problems. It can allow a child to work through their anxieties where they can realign themselves, helping to overcome these difficulties. When a child acts out, this can be seen as bad behaviour, however this is just a means of communicating the thing they are unable to express. Therapeutic play can help this, giving the child a safe place to come to terms with their inner turmoil, resulting in improved behaviour.
Here we offer one to one and group reflective practice. This is in a safe protected place for educational professionals to reflect on themselves and their own practice, using the therapeutic relationship offered by a counsellor. This relationship is based on a high level of challenge, coupled with complete support, to encourage the professional to consider problems from another's viewpoint. This is also a place to reflect on the children they teach and the staff and families they work along side. It allows space to assess the impact of all the demands and expectations placed on these relationships and creates a self supporting culture, able to embrace its challenges and overcome them together.
